5 Tips For Driving Without Back Pain
Do you experience discomfort in your back and neck after driving, particularly during your longer trips? In the video below Dr. Freedman shows you how to set up your car seat & driving position to make driving a little less painful. You’d be surprised what a difference a few modifications can make.
Sit in the car properly: Instead of hurrying to sit, sit backward first with your knees in front and then rotate your pelvis forward by holding the steering wheel. To get out, repeat the process.
Remove the wallet from your back pocket: Sitting on a wallet creates an unevenness in the pelvis that stresses the low back over time, causing back pain.
Adjust the seat properly: Adjust the seat to reduce the hip angle and place a folded towel underneath for extra support if the seat is old or uncomfortable.
Set up the backrest: Adjust the backrest to provide good support to your lower back, and make sure the headrest supports your head. Place a small pillow or back support at the small of your back if you cannot find the support you need.
Take breaks and move around: Take breaks every hour or so, even if it is a two-minute break to move around, and do some knee marches or back extensions to reset your back and neck.
